Euopean Cycling Trail - By Push-Bike Through Europe
If you explore Europe by bike, there’s no getting around Saxony-Anhalt: the European Cycling Trail winds its way through the Harz mountains.
The “R1” is the ultimate European Cycling Route. The 3500km long route starts in Calais in France and leads all the way to St. Petersburg in Russia. But even if you do “only” the German part you will find it challenging enough! Coming from the Dutch border, the trail winds its way through Münsterland, the Teutoburger Forest and along the Harz via Fläming to Potsdam, Berlin and on through Brandenburg before reaching the Polish border at Küstrin. The route through Saxony-Anhalt is absolutely beautiful. In the beginning the “R1”, which comes in from Lower Saxony, follows the Harz Loop Trail before turning north into the Harz mountains at Meisdorf. The trail then heads in an eastern direction towards Staßfurt, Bernburg, Dessau, Wittenberg and on to Fläming near Kropstädt where the 222km long trail leaves Saxony-Anhalt. Along the route you will find plenty of interesting sights such as Falkenstein castle to keep you culturally entertained.
