Ballenstedt
"St. Pankratius und Abandus"
Ballenstedt is considered to be the oldest ancestral home of the Ascanians and the cradle of Anhalt. In 1043, a collegiate chapter was founded which was converted into a Benedictine monastery in 1123. The castle complex is particularly impressive because of the Romanesque wing of the former monastery church (today’s castle tower). The Nicolai chapel houses the tomb of "Albrecht der Bär”, who was the most important Ascanian of the 12th century.
