Saxony-Anhalt in the 18th Century

In the 18th century Saxony-Anhalt provided stimulus for culture in Germany and intellectual life across Europe.

In the first half of the 18th century Hall saw two intellectual movements that were poles apart: Pietism and Enlightenment.  The baroque triumvirate of Bach, Händel and Telemann were celebrating successes across Europe, Winckelmann from Stendal was one of the founders of modern scientific archaeology, and a count had designed a uniquely beautiful Garden Kingdom.

Numerous castles, historic buildings, parklands and gardens still testify to the region’s eventful past. In Europe the 18th century was a time of political change that opened the door to the modern world, and politics, economy, technology, philosophy and the art were given a fresh impetus. The spirit of those times can still be felt in Saxony-Anhalt.
Museums in Bad Lauchstädt, Dessau, Halberstadt, Halle, Quedlinburg, Stendal, Wernigerode, Wiederstedt and the Wörlitz Garden Kingdom take visitors on journeys of discovery through the 18th century. Numerous parks, gardens and historic buildings nearby offer the perfect backdrop to experience history, among them such famous  locations as the Goethe Theater in Bad Lauchstädt, the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom or Quedlinburg, one of the best-preserved medieval and renaissance towns in Europe.
