Händel City - a City of Music
Georg Friedrich Händel, one of Europe’s most important composers, was born in Halle on the River Saale on February 23, 1685. At the tender age of seven he was already a skillful performer on the harpsichord and the organ, and at nine he began to compose music. Today his birth house, the Händel House, serves as memorial site and museum, and is the venue of the annual Händel Festival taking place in June. In his lifetime the prolific composer created over 600 works, among them 100 Italian cantatas and chamber duets, over 40 great operas, about 30 serenades, odes as well as instrumental compositions.
