The Orange Order and Saxony-Anhalt

The Oranienbaum Castle and Park form part of the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom, designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The royal Orange Order Route runs through the grounds.

Juliane von Stolberg, born in 1506 in Stolberg/Harz, was the mother of Wilhelm von Nassau, a direct ancestor of today’s Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. In 1659 Count Johann Georg II. of Anhalt-Dessau (1627-1693) married Catharina of Nassau-Orania (1637-1708). The town of Nieschwitz was given to her by her husband as a morning gift after the wedding night. In the years to follow, the town, renamed “Oranienbaum”, experienced its heydays. The small settlement soon became a royal residence with a beautiful castle, park and parklands, designed and built by Dutch artists and craftsmen.
Some other stations of the Route of the Orange Order in Saxony-Anhalt:

Wernigerode: The Wernigerode dynasty owes its “Orange” touch, so to speak, to Juliana von Stolberg (born 1506), the wife Wilhelm the Rich and mother of Willhelm the Quiet, on whom she had great influence. The Stolberg dynasty possessed the Wernigerode castle for several centuries and was later called "Stolberg-Wernigerode". The castle is open to visitors all year round.

Stolberg: "Wilhelm von Nassau, of German descent I am, loyal to the fatherland” is how the Dutch anthem starts. Why German you might ask? Look into the Dutch history you will soon come across the name Wilhelm of Nassau and Juliana of Stolberg, his mother. Juliana was born on 15 February 1506 on a castle in Stolberg and is a direct ancestor of today’s Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. A monument in Den Haag reminds of Juliana’s participation in the Netherlands’ fight for freedom, the loss of her sons and almost everything she owned.

Dessau and Wörlitz: Princess Henriette Catherina of Orania-Nassau brought a large art collection to Dessau. Her wealth and richness grew even more when she received her share of her mother’s inheritance. This so called “Orange Inheritance” can still be seen in the Painting Collections in Dessau and at Schloss Wörlitz.
