Handel Festival in the composers city of birth, Halle
The Handel Festival is one of the undisputed cultural highlights in Saxony-Anhalt.
Every June, Halle commemorates its greatest son – the baroque composer Georg Friedrich Händel (1685 – 1759). Händel buffs, music loving tourists and music scientists from all over the world flock to Halle to indulge their passion for this prolific composer’s music. The Händel Festival, which was first staged in 1922 and on an annual basis every since 1952, aims at performing Georg Friedrich Händel’s works according to latest scientific and artistic findings. The Festival focuses on Händel’s operas as well as oratorios and chamber music compositions. At least one opera is performed each year. Venues include the Opera House in Halle and the Goethe Theater in Bad Lauchstädt. The Händel Festival Orchestra performs exclusively on period instruments.
