Today the Biosphere Reserve covers an area of 200,000 hectares
and boasts Central Europe’s largest marshland forest.
The riverscape along the Elbe is a habitat for many plants and animals. Between the mouths of Mulde and Saale are the Elbe region’s most precious marshland forests and Germany’s most important ecosystems: the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve.
The “old” 43,0000 ha reserve between Wittenberg and Saalemünde was extended and now comprises the entire Elbe river (303km) in Saxony-Anhalt. Also included in the reserve are all Elbe marshlands, the tributaries’ mouth areas and marshlands, all adjoining nature and landscape reserves as well as some unprotected areas.
Today the Biosphere Reserve covers an area of 200,000 hectares and boasts Central Europe’s largest marshland forest; it is home to a great number of plant and animal species, among them approx. 1,200 of the once endangered Elbe beavers. Those who wish to see these rodents close up, should visit the Beaver Park between Oranienbaum and Dessau.
The scenic Elbe landscapes are best explored on self-guided tours. Walkers and cyclists will find a wealth of beautiful trails and spots where to relax and revel in the beauty of Nature.
