Dom St. Johannes und Laurentius (Saint John the Baptist and Saint Lawrence Cathedral) and Neumarktkirche St. Thomae Cantuariensis
Here on the Saale in the High Middle Ages stood a palace where German kings and emperors held court. Numerous architectural monuments indicate the former greatness of this royal residence and centre of power. Merseburg is one of 60 stations on the “Romanesque Road“. As the history books relate, this historical and cultural centre was a continuous source of important stimuli for the area of central Germany. The Merseburg chapter – since 1930 part of the United Cathedral Chapters of Merseburg and Naumburg and the Collegiate Chapter Zeitz – can look back on 1000 years of uninterrupted continuity. North of the palace chapel which was later elevated to a diocese, King Henry II had a large cathedral erected between 1015 and 1021. Bishop Hunold finished enlarging the structure in 1042. The west towers and the eastern sections of this structure are still preserved. Cathedral treasury: The Merseburg cathedral treasury is a must see. It includes the renowned Merseburg Incantations from the 10th century, one of the oldest examples of the written German language. Especially valuable, along with further medieval manuscripts, documents and early prints, is the Merseburg inventory of medieval liturgical textiles. These include a bishop’s robe from the 10th-11th century, probably sent to Merseburg as a gift by Henry II.
