Dom St. Peter und Paul (Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul)
-with a 13th-century baptismal font
The Dom St. Peter und Paul is now part of the Early Baroque castle complex Moritzburg. Nothing remains of the first cathedral built in the 9th century.
The current structure, however, retains parts of the Early Romanesque church and the cloister erected with it from the second quarter of the 11th century, including the Early Romanesque crypt (one of the oldest in central Germany) and parts of the choir, the transept and the nave.
Aside from the austere crypt, whose capitals are completely unornamented except for the western pair with a simple spiral pattern, only sparse remains of the Romanesque interior have been preserved. These include part of a retable in the crypt and a fragment from the tombstone of the first Bishop of Zeitz, Hugo I. One outstanding feature is the early 13th-century baptismal font with a steep basin in quatrefoil form over a foot with ornamented corners.
