Halberstadt

Fabulous architecture and treasures: Halberstadt is known as the ”Gateway to the Harz”. The cathedral houses a priceless treasure.

Halberstadt cathedral is one of the most significant examples of Gothic architecture. The cathedral treasury is considered the most extensive collection of medieval art remaining to German churches. The first mission church stood on the cathedral hill between 802 and 809. When Halberstadt was raised to a diocese in 804, the structure was first enlarged and then consecrated as a cathedral in 859. The Ottonian cathedral was consecrated in 992. The 100-meter-long, “three-naved” or “hall” church construction lends a harmonious impression to the interior of the cathedral, which has been referred to as “the purest example of French Gothic architecture on German soil”. Cathedral treasury: The cathedral treasury is considered the largest collection of medieval art remaining to a German church. With more than 600 objects, nearly every category and material are represented, including a large number of historically or art historically significant pieces. The cathedral treasury reflects the liturgical life of the Middle Ages, the most important aspects of piety and theology and not leastly the impressive acquirements and skill of medieval artisans. Curiously enough, the treasures are displayed in the rooms of the former cloister, in immediate connection with the cathedral. So the treasury, as part of the old sacristy, harbours magnificent reliquaries worked in gold, liturgical items, small precious objects of art and manuscripts.
