Museum of Prehistory in Halle
After extensive renovation, Germany’s oldest facility constructed for housing prehistoric archaeology reopened in May 2008 with new extensions for the permanent Neolithic and Bronze Age exhibitions. Finally on display once again: the Sky Disc of Nebra.

The museum’s collection with more than 10 million artefacts, primarily of central German origin, extends from evidence of the first humans to the early Modern Era. The main attraction ist still the 3,600-year-old Nebra Sky Disc, the oldest concrete representation of the cosmos worldwide.
Treasure looters discovered the disc in 1999 on the Mittelberg, but the piece didn’t come into the hands of state archaeologists until February 23rd, 2002, after a first-class detective story. Dr Harald Meller played the part of “buyer“at the bogus sales meeting in the Basel Hilton during a sting operation. The looters were taken into custody by the Swiss police and sentenced to a fine.
Along with the disc, Meller and his colleagues brought home a piece of identity: many people in Saxony-Anhalt have come to feel a common pride in the Bronze Age stargazers and their 3,600-year-old tools.
