On the road in the land of Luther

World heritage from three eras ― as far as the eye can see

LuBaGa

The world-famous home of Martin Luther is situated in the picturesque east of Germany. Almost 500 years after he nailed his theses to the wall in 1517, much has changed in the small Renaissance city of Wittenberg, which is found in the German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt. But then again, in some ways, not a lot has changed either. Today you can still find the most famous locations of the Reformation side by side in the streets of the historic old town. The people of Germany have already started to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the publishing of the Ninety-Five Theses, with a "Luther decade" lasting until the year 2017. Those who visit Lutherstadt Wittenberg will find another three UNESCO-protected sites without having to travel further than 35km-away - something which is rare in Europe and unique in Germany.

In Wittenberg, Luther preached for a belief in God without fear and the selling of indulgences and in Dessau, Bauhaus artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Lyonel Feininger composed designs which are still influential today. Not all too far away, Prince Franz of Anhalt-Dessau created a world-famous 142km2 garden. All of this is linked by a UNESCO-protected biosphere reserve of ancient riparian forest along the River Elbe, the second-longest river in Germany, where White-tailed Eagles, European Otters and thousands of busy beavers all live. Luther's wife Katharina von Bora, alias Nicole Dalichow, hurries over the cobblestone courtyard of the Schwarzes Kloster [black monastery]. The most famous Wittenberg scenic city tour expert will accompany you through the Renaissance city on the banks of the River Elbe for two hours or more along with the many extras she employs dressed in historical costumes. Number of hills? None. Distance? 930 meters up the street. The first stop of more than 20 is the impressive house which belonged to Luther - today the largest Reformation history museum in the world. This is where Luther's most famous works were created, this is where his students from all over the world listened to his legendary speeches.

Along with the other Dessau houses where the greatest artists and architects of the time lived and worked, the Bauhaus situated in Dessau, 35 kilometers away from Wittenberg, is today considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many other Bauhaus houses can be seen around the city including the famous Kornhaus [granary] countryside restaurant on the banks of the Elbe or the Törten district consisting of more than 300 houses.

With tolerant policies and way of thinking, the grandson of "the Old Dessauer" Leopold I, created a green model state at the time of The Enlightenment in Germany, where everything beautiful was also useful. A seemingly-infinite garden which brought together life, landscape, architecture and fine arts. In 2000 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over a period of 40 years, five more parks were constructed in the extensive countryside to accompany the highlight, the Wörlitz Garden Realm. Prince Franz skillfully linked them all together over an area of 142km2 by building fruit-tree-lined boulevards, levees and creating lines of sight.
