German tree cake, asparagus and wedding soup: Food from the Altmark region
On the first Wednesday of each month and every Sunday in the Altmark city Salzwedel, you can witness how the great delicacy of the Altmark region will be produced in the city centre.
Bakers are baking German tree cake over open fires in public. The Altmark region was home to the Imperial Chancellor Bismarck, a true gourmand. Bismarck loved it good and solid: Roast goose, deer, and fish specialities. At the largest lake of Saxony-Anhalt, the Arendsee lake, the vendace is caught. In a local fishery you can purchase the freshly smoked salmon-like fish, which lives exclusively in lakes with a certain depth. Every year until 21 June the good Altmark asparagus can be found on all menu cards of well-conducted restaurants.
