Martin Luther, the Father of the Reformation, spent most of his life (1483-1546) in the neighboring German states of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. About halfway between Berlin and Frankfurt, this region is celebrating the LutherDecade, the 10-year build-up to 2017 and the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.
The towns where Martin Luther lived, worked, preached and taught are all close together and easy to visit. Just an hour from Eisenach and Wartburg Castle, where he translated the New Testament into German, are Erfurt and Schmalkalden. Ninety minutes from Lutherstadt Wittenberg, the Birthplace of the Reformation and Luther's home for 35 years, are Halle (Saale) and Lutherstadt Eisleben.
In the build up to 2017 and the 500th anniversary celebrations of the Reformation, why not come and visit us in LutherCountry? Every year, from now until 2017, we will focus on a special theme, such as music or art, and celebrate the decade in authentic cities. So regardless of when you visit, there will always be special events in LutherCountry.
