Cathedral St. Stephanus und St. Sixtus zu Halberstadt
The Halberstadt Cathedral Treasury harbours the largest collection of medieval art that remains to German churches.
The cathedral treasury’s extensive 300 piece textile collection is unparalled. Beginning April 8th, it will be on display in extended and remodelled exhibition rooms. Europe’s oldest preserved tapestry, the 1.14 x 10.04 meter Abraham-Angel Tapestry is just one of the many optically as well as art historically extraordinary pieces of the collection. Precious reliquaries, altar furnishings and ivory carvings attest to the great skill of Islamic and Byzantinian craftsmen. While the cathedral cloister undergoes remodelling, the public is offered a first-class interim exhibition of the most important treasury pieces.
