Garden Dreams in Altmark, Börde and Heideland
The wide blue sky between Salzwedel and Stendal, the fertile soils around Magdeburg, and the sheer endless lime forest of the Letzlinger Heide from the perfect backdrop for fascinating city greens, enchanted castle gardens, and baroque gems.

On the way from Magdeburg to Altmarkt you’ll find baroque gems galore. The terrace gardens of Hundisburg palace were lovingly restored in the last years, the adjoining park was created in 1810 and boasts a remarkable blend of garden art and agricultural use. The formerly baroque Harbke castle gardens were redesigned as landscape gardens at the end of the 18th century. The parks once accommodated some 300 different rare and precious kinds of wood of which only 65 are still left. The Orangerie, built 1830/31 in a new gothic style, is being restored at the moment.
Tangerhütte was already guest at the 1889 world exhibition in Paris with its cast-iron Garden Pavilion. This world-famous exhibit is now on display in the Tangerhütte city parks which also accommodates the villas of the factory owners Wagenführ and von Arnim as well as an artificial waterfall.
The ramparts in Gardelegen date from 1300; in the 19th century the fortifications were planted with lime trees. History buffs will love the ancient walls with their impressive gates!
Enchanted is probably the word that best describes the castle parks in Krumke which is famous for its wealth of old trees, among them a 400-year old box tree. In 1860 the baroque gardens were turned into a landscape park; a few years ago the parked was even used as movie location.
