The northern and southern routes of the “Romanesque Road” meet in Magdeburg. Here Dom St. Mauritius (St. Maurice’s Cathedral), the Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen (Cloister of Our Dear Lady), the St. Petri-Kirche (Church of St. Petri), and the Probsteikirche St. Sebastian (Church of St. Sebastian) all invite you to travel back in time to the Middle Ages.
Magdeburg Cathedral, Domkirche St. Maritius’ und St. Katharina. In the Middle Ages, Magdeburg was one of the political centres of Europe and, following Constantinople, was considered the “Third Rome“. Otto the Great, son of the first German king, Henry I, and founder of the Holy Roman Empire, chose Magdeburg as his favourite residence and turned this city, the home of his first wife Editha, into his wedding gift to her. The construction of the first cathedral in Germany to have both a Gothic style floor plan and a Gothic style wall elevation began in 1209 under Archbishop Albrecht II von Kefernburg. Along with a wealth of significant works of art, visitors can also view the the tomb of Otto I in the upper choir. Treasures: Cloister with tomb slabs from various epochs, baptismal font made of rose porphyry, sixteen-sided “Holy Grave Chapel” with seated figures of “the throned pair”, sculptures of the five wise and the five foolish virgins on the paradise entrance (circa 1270), ambulatory with the tomb of Queen Editha, tomb of Otto I in the choir, Marien chapel with Elisabeth altar. The most recent work of art is most probably the “Magdeburger Ehrenmal” by Ernst Barlach near the paradise entrance (4). First commissioned as a heroic war memorial, it shows the pain and suffering of war instead, which caused a great controversy upon its unveiling. Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen This structure, erected in 1064, is one of the best preserved examples from the Romanesque period. Church and cloister impart an authentic impression of the original collegiate church founded in 1017/1018. A concert hall and the art museum of the federal state capital are located here today.
