Havelberg Dom St. Marien
(Cathedral of St. Marian)
Gothic-altered pillar basilica
The Havelburg cathedral, a Gothic-adapted, Romanesque pillar basilica, is one of the most outstanding architectural monuments in the Altmark. The cathedral and former Praemonstratensian Monastery with cloister, chapter house, kitchen and dormitories dating from the 12-15th centuries attests to the unsettled history of the region in the last 1000 years. Nothing remains of the first Ottonian cathedral. The second cathedral, erected between 1150-1170, is, however, preserved in the current structure.
The Havelburg Cathedral houses a rich collection of medieval furnishings. One of the oldest works, the triumphal cross group, was created sometime between 1270 and 1280. The choir stalls and three sandstone candelabra are only slightly less ancient. A precious adornment of the church is the richly embellished rood screen, from the late 14th to early 15th century, which shows a comprehensive Passion cycle. In addition, some of the medieval stained glass windows are still intact. A history of the Diocese of Havelberg and its cathedral from the 13th century on can be gleaned from the numerous tombs.
