Magdeburg Cathedral Cathedral Church "St. Mauritius and Katharina"
During the Middle Ages Magdeburg was one of the political centres of Europe and was –next to Constantinople- considered to be the “Third Rome”. It was chosen by Otto the Great, the son of the first German King Heinrich IV and founder of the Holy Roman Empire, as his favourite residence. He gave it to his first wife Editha as a wedding gift. The building of the cathedral started in 1209 under Archbishop Albrecht II von Kefernburg and was the first church designed wholly in the Gothic style.
The Ottonian building preceding it was almost totally destroyed by fire in 1207. As well as an abundance of works of art the visitor may also see the tomb of emperor Otto I in the chancel.

Monastery "Unser Lieben Frauen"
This nunnery was built in 1064 and is one of the best preserved buildings of the Romanesque period. Church and cloister give an authentic impression of the original construction of the Kollegiatsstift (nunnery) of 1018. Today it houses a concert hall and the art museum of the provincial capital.
