Cathedral and Cathedral Treasures of Halberstadt
The first church to be built on this site was a cathedral which was consecrated in 992. The present building was begun in the 13th century in pure Gothic style. The group of triumph-crosses of the late Romanesque period of 1220 is considered to be the most important part of the church interior. The vault is unique as it houses a number of medieval figurative carpets, e.g. the Abraham-Carpet of 1150. The Byzantine bread-bowl (for consecrational purposes) was brought back from the 4th crusade. The collection also includes liturgical robes, altar pieces and precious reliquaries.
