If you are following Luther’s tracks in Saxony-Anhalt you will have to visit Magdeburg, Halle, Zeitz, Zerbst, Dessau, Stolberg and Allstedt
In Magdeburg Luther attended the cathedral school. In 1524 he returned and preached against radical trends of reformation. Madgeburg turned into the center of protestantism and was also called “our Lord’s office”. A monument reminds of the prominent guest. Luther visited Halle/Saale already as a young Augustinian monk. Only a few months before his death he preached in Halle. In 1546 when Luther’s body was taken from Eisleben via Halle to Wittenberg wax prints of his hands and face were made, which can still be visited today in the „Marktkirche“ church in Halle. Luther also preached in Naumburg – on his way to the „Reichstag” in Worms – in front of an enthusiastic crowd and consecrated the first protestant bishop in 1542. In Zeitz in the „Michaeliskirche“ church a precious original print of Luther’s 95 propositions dating back to 1517 remind of the strong connection between the town and Luther. But Luther also visited Zerbst several times. The historic library of the Zerbst Francisceum holds one of Cranach’s magnificently illustrated bibles. Important evidence of reformation history can also be visited in Dessau. The Dessau “Fürst Georg-Bibilothek” library houses one of the most important collections of writings of reformation age. In 1525 Luther travelled several times into the center of peasant’s revolt and preached f.i. in Stolberg, the birth village of his opponent Thomas Müntzer. The work and life of Müntzer is closely connected to Allstedt. Müntzer held his famous “Fürstenpredigt” speech in the palace in 1524. The Allstedter Schloss houses an exhibition dealing with this topic.
