Venues of Reformation in Saxony-Anhalt

If you wish to follow Luther’s tracks to Saxony-Anhalt, you should stop by in Magdeburg, Halle, Zeitz, Zerbst, Dessau, Stolberg and Allstedt.

Magedburg is where young Luther attended Domschule. In 1524 he returned to the city to preach against the radical factions with the reformation movement. Magdeburg became the center of Protestantism and was nicknamed “Our Lord’s Office”. A monument still reminds of the famous visitor. As a young Augustinian monk Luther for the first time visited Halle (Saale). Shortly before his death he held a sermon there. When, in 1546, Luther’s corpse was transported from Eisleben via Halle to Wittenberg, wax impressions were made of Luther’s hands and face, which today are on display at Marktkirche in Halle. On his way to the Reichstag in Worms Luther stopped in Naumburg where he spoke to a crowd of enthusiastic followers and, in 1542, introduced the first protestant bishop.
Michaelis church in Zeitz possesses a valuable original print of Luther’s propositions dating from 1517. Another town Luther used to visit several times is Zerbst. The library of the Francisceum takes pride in owning a beautiful old bible splendidly illustrated with drawings by Cranach. Other precious items of the reformation history can be found in Dessau where the Fürst Georg Library holds one of the most important collections of documents and treatises from the Reformation. In 1525 Luther frequently traveled in to the center of the peasant rebellion and held inflammatory speeches in Stolberg, the town where his adversary Thomas Müntzer was born. In Allstedt Müntzer agitated for the most radical of religious and social reform, but in 1524 he was driven out at Luther's instigation. An exhibition on Müntzer can be seen at Allstedt castle.
