Mansfeld - Lutherstadt - Childhood in Mansfeld
Luther grew up in this area where his father was a well-known and established
steelworker Master.
Until the 18th century, the Mansfeld area was reigned over by the Mansfeld Princes, one of the oldest German dynasties.
Since the 12th century and for the next 800 years, the area was living from the copper mines. Luther grew up in this area where his father was a well-known and established steelworker Master. Luther’s parents’ former house accommodates
a Museum. The Reformer remained faithful his whole life to the Princes and to the region. It seems that the alias “Junker Jörg” used by Luther during his time in the Wartburg was a remembrance to the holy Georg who appears on the flag of the city of Mansfeld.
The Castle of Mansfeld was first a Romanesque Citadel. Between 1509 and 1549, three Renaissance Castles were added on the place. The Luther’s parents’ house, the St. Georg Church, the Luther’s spring as well as the Luther’s school belong to the worth seeing places of the city near the Harz Mountains.
In the city information of the Luther’s school you can find a modern multimedia centre.
