Childhood and Old Age in Weißenfels
Heinrich Schütz is generally regarded as the most important German composer before Johann Sebastian Bach and is often considered to be one of the most important composers of the 17th century along with Claudio Monteverdi. Born in Köstritz in 1585, his parents moved to Weissenfels in 1950 where is father runs an inn. After being a choir-boy he went to study law in Marburg before moving to Dresden in 1617 where he worked as court composer to the Elector of Saxony. He held this post until retiring in Weissenfels in 1657. Today his house is a memorial site and the only original building in which Heinrich Schütz had lived and worked. The “Middle German Heinrich Schütz Days” are held every October.
