Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz (UNESCO World Heritage)

A symbiosis of man and nature, a union of the beautiful with the useful – this has always been a yearning of humans. These longings were given shape with the Garden Kingdom.

What in idyllic place! Kühnau Lake glitters like a jewel in the morning sun. The splendid palace and church on its shores invite you to stop by and explore them. The Wörlitz park is the oldest original English landscape park on the European mainland. The Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz is an exceptional example of landscape design and planning of the Age of the Enlightenment. Its diverse components - outstanding buildings, landscaped parks and gardens in the English style, and subtly modified expanses of agricultural land - serve aesthetic, educational, and economic purposes in an exemplary manner.

Oranienbaum has become famous since the visit of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands the latest. The palace and the gardens as well as the pretty village ensemble of Oranienbaum are characterized by Dutch baroque. The palace parks are with its tea house, the five-story pagoda, and the Orangery which has been accommodating the parks’ beautiful citrus trees during the cold winter for 300 years. The Garden Kingdom’s probably most beautiful greenspace area are the Luisium palace gardens. The palace itself is probably one of the most photographed objects here. Another must on every trip to Dessau is a visit to Georgium palace and gardens including the ruins of Wallwitz castle on the shores of Elbe river. Also not to be missed are the rococo Mosigkau palace and gardens with its Orangeries, the Chinese House, and the maze. For the best views of the Garden Kingdom walk up Sieglitzer Berg near Vockerode. back
