Sky Paths: Saxony-Anhalt Star Born

How did men live in the Bronze Age? What did they know about the sun, the moon and the stars? A new tourist route in Saxony-Anhalt provides the answers to these and other questions. Archeological findings en route, like the famous “Nebra Sky Disc”, offer insight into early history.

The region south of Saxony-Anhalt, the so-called “Tuscany of the North, is not only well-known for its castles, palaces and wines, but also for its archeological gems. The 3,600-year-old bronze Nebra Sky Disc“, one of the last decades most spectacular findings, and is considered the oldest-known image of the cosmos. 25km from the discovery site of the Nebra Sky Disc, Europe’s oldest dated astronomical observatory (approx. 7000 years old) was found in Goseck. Archeologists are certain the observatory with its function of tracking time played a crucial role in a society dominated by the changing seasons. They theorize that both the Goseck observatory and the Nebra disc indicate that astronomical knowledge was tied to a mythological-cosmological world view right from the beginning.

In 1987 the small town of Langeneichstädt in Saxony-Anhalt came to archeological fame thanks to the finding of an exceptional chambered tomb from the Middle Neolithic Age. The tomb houses a Menhir with an engraved dolmen goddess and jewelry which provide information on the world of Stone Age men and their perception of the hereafter. The stele also provides hints on magical customs of those times. In 2006 a new tourist route titled "Sky Paths" was opened which links the discovery sites of the “Nebra Sky Disc” on Mittelberg bei Wangen (Burgenland District), the Astronomical Observatory in Goseck with its informative visitor center ( Weißenfels District), the Dolmen Goddess of Langeneichstätt (Merseburg-Querfurt District) and the Museum of Prehistory in Halle (Saale) .

The charming region around Saale and Unstrut in the south of Saxony-Anhalt already has plenty to offer for the visitor: mystic castles, splendid palaces, historic towns, idyllic lakes, romantic valleys along the “Blue Ribbon”, fine wines, famous buildings along the “Romanesque Route” and impressive nature parks. The new archeological sites and places of worship will add to the region’s attractiveness. Whether on foot, by bicycle or by boat – the “Saale-Unstrut” region always makes for a memorable experience!
