How did men live in the Bronze Age? What did they know about the sun, the moon and the stars? A new tourist route in Saxony-Anhalt provides the answers to these and other questions. Archeological findings en route, like the famous “Nebra Sky Disc”, offer insight into early history.
In 1987 the small town of Langeneichstädt in Saxony-Anhalt came to archeological fame thanks to the finding of an exceptional chambered tomb from the Middle Neolithic Age. The tomb houses a Menhir with an engraved dolmen goddess and jewelry which provide information on the world of Stone Age men and their perception of the hereafter. The stele also provides hints on magical customs of those times. In 2006 a new tourist route titled "Sky Paths" was opened which links the discovery sites of the “Nebra Sky Disc” on Mittelberg bei Wangen (Burgenland District), the Astronomical Observatory in Goseck with its informative visitor center ( Weißenfels District), the Dolmen Goddess of Langeneichstätt (Merseburg-Querfurt District) and the Museum of Prehistory in Halle (Saale) .
The charming region around Saale and Unstrut in the south of Saxony-Anhalt already has plenty to offer for the visitor: mystic castles, splendid palaces, historic towns, idyllic lakes, romantic valleys along the “Blue Ribbon”, fine wines, famous buildings along the “Romanesque Route” and impressive nature parks. The new archeological sites and places of worship will add to the region’s attractiveness. Whether on foot, by bicycle or by boat – the “Saale-Unstrut” region always makes for a memorable experience!
