Top attraction: The Naumburger Dom (Naumburg Cathedral), where the Saale and Unstrut rivers meet, is the most visited architectural work on the “Romanesque Road”.
Discover this city on the “Romanesque Road“. Surrounded by idyllic castles and the wine region along the Saale and Unstrut rivers, it is the perfect travel destination for people who love culture, nature, and culinary delights. Naumburg Cathedral is the most frequented site on the “Romanesque Road“. Its Romanesque-Gothic architecture and High Gothic monumental sculpture and architectural ornament make it one of the most important cultural monuments of the Middle Ages. The 12 life-sized figures of the founders in the west choir (the best known pair is Ekkehard and Uta), as well as the reliefs of the Passion on the west rood screen were created in the mid-13th century by the so-called Naumburg Master and are quite impressive for their unusually realistic portrayal. Significant for architectural and art history are the Late Romanesque crypt, the east rood screen and the medieval stained glass windows. Cathedral treasury: The cathedral’s vaulted treasury lies under the west wing of the cloister. Restored and open to the public since June 2006, it is certainly the most intriguing part of the cathedral tour. Since it was founded in 1028, the cathedral chapter of Naumburg has obtained a number of prominent works of art primarily meant for liturgical use. These include priceless manuscripts, magnificent winged altars, paintings and sculptures. Since June 2006, quite a number of extremely valuable pieces of art have found a prestigious and permanent home here under the best climatic conditions. These include two remarkable altar panels by Lucas Cranach the elder. A special cultural treasure is the 13th-century “Johannesschüssel“ (St. John the Baptist’s head on a platter). It is one of the earliest plastic representations of this theme in medieval Europe. The wooden Pietá from the early 14th century is a further highlight of the vaulted treasury. Because it has retained its original colours and because of its poignant expression, the Naumburg Pietá is one of the most impressive sculptures of any time period.
