Müller-Thurgau, Riesling and Spätburgunder
Sachsen-Anhalt’s wine growing region is one of Germany’s oldest and smallest. The main grape here is the Müller-Thurgau. Its wines are generally light, with a flowery bouquet and less acidity than Riesling. Müller-Thurgau often carries a hint of Muscat in its flavor. The wines are best consumed while fresh and young. Other white wines include the elegant Weissburgunder, or Pinot Blanc, and Silvaner, a light and soft wine with noticeable acidicy and pleasant aroma and flavor. Other whites besides the popular Riesling include less famous ones such as Kerner, which produces quality, Riesling-like wines with good acidity, floral characteristics, and aging ability, Faber, Hölder and Ortega. Among the red varietals are Dornfelder, a dark red, fruity, tannic, and full-bodied wine, Portugieser, a grape that produces light red and rosé wines, and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir).
