Hötensleben Border Monument, near Helmstedt
A 350 metre-long, 6.5 square hectare section of the former Inner-German Border erected by the GDR is authentically preserved here. The screening wall, signal fencing, lines of sight and fire with floodlights, border patrol path with a typical anti-vehicle barrier, border wall and control tower remain intact. The barricade is especially impressive at this site because it runs immediately behind the houses of a now deserted town. Its inhabitants were forced to relocate.
In the "Haus der Geschichte" (House of History), visitors find an exhibition on daily life in the former GDR that is unique in Germany. Its meticulously true to original displays of living quarters from the ‘40’s to the ‘80’s offer an authentic picture of how East German citizens lived in the period after the war, for instance, or the conditions facing the so-called "resettlers". The typical furnishings include a kidney-shaped table in the ‘50’s, adjustable furniture in the ‘60’s, orange accessories in the ‘70’s, and a three-piece sofa set in the ‘80’s. A kindergarten, a restaurant, a nightclub, a "Konsum" (state-run supermarket) and an exhibition on GDR design round out this journey into East German daily life.

Open-Air Border Museum Sorge
All "displays" in the Open-Air Border Museum Sorge are preserved originals and relicts that were actually in use at this site along the former Inner-German Border. A barbed wire signal fence with gates and a free-run zone for attack dogs at the beginning of the 500-metre restricted area, the concrete border patrol path, a border observation tower BT-11 with searchlights and loudspeakers, and the infamous death strip with its minefield can all be seen here. Directly on the actual border between Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony stands the "Ring of Remembrance" created by environmental and landscape artist Herman Prigann. The artist created the model of a witches’ circle here by placing striking pieces of old lumber together in the form of a large ring.
