Anhalt´s former residential town has got a whole lot to offer in terms of tradition. It was here, that Oechelhaeuser started to build gas motors and Junkers constructed the world´s first full-metal airplane.
The town gained international importance thanks to the world-famous Bauhaus style. Bauhaus buildings are spread all over Dessau. UNESCO has put Bauhaus Dessau and the Meisterhäuser buildings on the World Culture Heritage list.
Moses Mendelsohn, Wilhelm Müller and Kurt Weill were all born in Dessau. Also Prince Leopold is known as the "Old Dessauer". His grandson, Prince Franz, who was a fervent supporter of the Enlightenment, created the Dessau-Wörlitz gardens.
Residential areas, Classicist palaces with English gardens and parks make up a perfectly harmonious whole located at the River Elbe and Mulde.
