Since the discovery of the spa in the 18th and 19th century, Bad Lauchstädt has been one of the most popular health resorts in all Germany. Many famous aristocrats and philosophers spent a spa break in Bad Lauchstädt.

In 1791 Goethe became director of the theater. According to his guidelines a new summer theatre was built in 1802 the stage technique of which is still working. Up to the present day many visitors are attracted by the performances in the Goethe theatre and the concerts in the historic casino. The guided tours through the spa grounds offer an interesting insight into the history of the place.
