Hohenstein castle is probably the most imteresting of all the ruined castles in our region.

The Brocken mountain is now accessible and has become a very popular hiking destination. Since 1899 the Brockenbahn mountain railway provides an easy and convenient way to reach the mountain top.

There you can still see former radar and monitoring devices used by the Soviet army.

In the 1950s the Schulenberg Okertal dam was built where once an old villgage stood.

The Okertal, which ranks among the most beautiful valleys in the Harz region, also offers outstanding water sports facilities. Close to the town of Ilsenburg, visitors will find the Ilsental falls, a popular hiking destination.

The town of Thale is mainly known for 2 sights: the Hexentanzplatz (witches´ dance square) and the Roßtrappe.

A number of finds proof tht the mountain massifs at the edge of town where used as places of worship in ancient Germanic times. The Hexentanzplatz is the location of a mountain theater (the oldest German nature stage) modelled on a Greek arena. Featuring a capacity of 1400 spectators, it is the venue for a number of performances from May until September.
