The lower Saale valley with its rocky areas is a charming landscape. The Wine Road along Saale and Unstrut includes one of Germany´s smallest and northernmost wine-growing areas. A number of castles, among them Rudelsburg (pictured below), Saaleck and Schönburg line these rivers.
Along the southern part of the "Romansque Road" through Saxony a number of special sights attract visitors. The Romanesque Landsberg twin chapel, the Carolingian castle in Querfurt, the Merseburger Dom cathedral and the Naumburger Dom cathedral bear witness of the region´s cultural past.
The wine-growing region between Saale and Unstrut is a landscape of contrasts, part untouched nature, part industrial area.
Those looking for active holidays might want to try the Saale hiking route, where lots of nature, culture and art await ambitious hikeres.
